Family Life in Birmingham: A City Made for Making Memories

From lazy Sundays in the park and chocolate-filled adventures to museums, family meals and big days out, Birmingham has everything families need to make the most of time together.

Birmingham might be famous for its shopping, nightlife, restaurants and cultural scene, but look a little closer and you’ll discover another side to the city — one built around family life.

It’s there on Saturday mornings when parks fill with children, bikes and footballs. It’s in the cafés where three generations squeeze around one table for brunch, and in those wonderfully chaotic family days out where everyone arrives home exhausted, slightly poorer, but with another story to tell.

And perhaps that is what Birmingham does particularly well: it gives families plenty of reasons to spend time together.

Green space in the middle of city life

For a major city, Birmingham has an impressive amount of greenery.

One of the best-loved destinations is Cannon Hill Park, with 80 acres of formal parkland alongside a further 120 acres of conservation and woodland. It is also home to the Midlands Arts Centre and Birmingham Wildlife Conservation Park.

It’s the sort of place where an inexpensive family afternoon can easily turn into an entire day.

Then there’s Sutton Park, Kings Heath Park, Lickey Hills and Sheldon Country Park, while Birmingham Botanical Gardens offers something rather more exotic, with more than 30,000 plants, Victorian glasshouses, gardens and a children’s adventure playground.

Big adventures for little Brummies

When you do want to make a proper occasion of it, Birmingham certainly isn’t short of possibilities.

Thinktank Birmingham Science Museum combines entertainment with hands-on learning, while the National SEA LIFE Centre Birmingham brings families face-to-face with an underwater world in the heart of the city.

And then, of course, there’s Cadbury World.

For generations of Birmingham families, the famous Bournville attraction has been one of those places children remember long after the day itself — although the prospect of chocolate tends to keep the grown-ups reasonably enthusiastic too.

LEGOLAND Discovery Centre adds another major family attraction to the mix, and there are plenty more choices across the wider West Midlands. The official Visit Birmingham family guide is a useful starting point for planning days out.

Sometimes the simple things are best

Family life doesn’t always need tickets, elaborate plans or an overflowing bank account.

One of Birmingham’s greatest pleasures is simply exploring it together.

Walk beside the canals, head into the city for lunch, browse the Bullring, introduce the children to the magnificent Library of Birmingham or discover a neighbourhood you haven’t visited before.

Birmingham City Council also highlights libraries, parks, museums, markets, playgrounds, city farms, walking routes and other activities among the things families can enjoy across the city.

And when the weather inevitably refuses to cooperate, Birmingham has enough indoor attractions, cinemas, theatres, museums, cafés and entertainment venues to rescue the wettest of weekends.

A city of many families

But family life in Birmingham is about more than places to visit.

This is an extraordinarily diverse city, and that is reflected around its family dinner tables, in its schools, neighbourhoods, restaurants and celebrations.

Different cultures and generations sit comfortably alongside one another. Children can grow up experiencing food, music, traditions and communities from around the world without ever leaving their home city.

That diversity gives Birmingham family life something genuinely special.

Home is where the memories are

The best family memories are rarely the perfectly planned ones.

They’re the ice cream dropped five minutes after buying it, the child who insists they’re not tired before falling asleep on the journey home, the picnic interrupted by rain and the photograph everybody complains about taking but treasures years later.

Birmingham provides the backdrop for millions of those little moments every year.

Because beneath the towers, shops, restaurants, arenas and famous landmarks is something much simpler.

Birmingham is a city people call home.

And for families growing up here, raising children here or simply spending a weekend together, it remains a pretty wonderful place to make memories.
