Cocktails, street food, live music and tropical vibes – Birdies brings a splash of sunshine to Birmingham whatever the weather is doing outside.
You don’t necessarily associate the industrial streets of Digbeth with tropical hideaways, but step inside Birdies Bar & BBQ and things suddenly become considerably more colourful.
Located in Birmingham’s famous Custard Factory, Birdies is a tropical-inspired bar where cocktails, street food and live entertainment come together to create one of Digbeth’s more distinctive places for a night out.
It’s bright, colourful and deliberately playful, with tropical murals, flowers, neon, deckchairs and plenty of greenery creating something that feels a long way from a conventional city-centre pub.
From lazy afternoons to lively nights
One of Birdies’ strengths is that its personality changes as the day progresses.
During the afternoon, it’s a relaxed place to meet friends, grab something to eat and settle down over a couple of drinks. As evening arrives, the energy moves up a few gears, with live music and DJs helping transform it into a much livelier Digbeth nightspot.
And you don’t necessarily need to organise your visit weeks beforehand. Birdies says walk-ins are welcome at any time, so you can simply turn up and see where the evening takes you.

Cocktails and street food
Naturally, a tropical bar needs a decent cocktail selection.
Birdies specialises in colourful, fruity drinks alongside beers and other bar favourites, making it particularly suited to groups looking for somewhere a little less formal.
Food is an equally important part of the experience. Expect the sort of casual street food that works perfectly with a few drinks and an evening with friends rather than anything unnecessarily complicated.
It’s that combination which makes Birdies work. You can come for a drink, stay for food and then find yourself hanging around considerably longer once the music starts.
Right in the middle of Digbeth
Location helps too.
The Custard Factory sits at the heart of Digbeth’s creative and entertainment district, meaning Birdies can either be the main event or the starting point for a bigger night exploring the area.
It’s a particularly good choice for birthdays, catch-ups, weekend drinks and groups of friends, while its relaxed daytime atmosphere gives it a different character earlier in the day.
Under-18s are currently welcome within the venue’s allocated seating area until 6.30pm, making earlier visits possible for families too.

When to visit
Current published opening hours are 3pm–10pm Monday to Thursday, noon–midnight Friday, noon–12.30am Saturday and 1pm–10pm Sunday. It’s always worth checking before travelling, particularly around special events and holidays.
The Birmingham Edit verdict
Birdies captures something Digbeth does particularly well: taking a simple night out and making it feel a little more interesting.
There’s no pretence here. It’s colourful, sociable and designed for having fun.
On a warm Birmingham afternoon, grab a drink and enjoy the laid-back tropical atmosphere. On a Friday or Saturday night, come for the cocktails, street food and music.
Either way, Birdies offers a little slice of holiday spirit without the inconvenience of having to leave Birmingham.
